Types of New Zealand Student Visas
New Zealand offers several types of student visas to cater to different needs, including but not limited to:
- Fee Paying Student Visa – Allow international students to study at approved institutions while covering their own tuition and living expenses.
- Pathway Student Visa – Enable international students to study at least two courses leading to higher education, usually facilitating their transition to a degree program.
- Dependent Child Student Visa – Allow the children of international students or workers to attend school while their parents study or work in New Zealand.
Requirements for a Student Visa
1. Maintenance Funds
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses while studying in New Zealand. The general requirement is NZD $17,000 – $20,000 per year for living expenses if you’re studying for more than 36 weeks, or NZD $1,417 – $1,667 per month if you’re studying for less than 36 weeks.
2. Tuition Fees
Proof of payment or sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees for the entire duration of your course is required. This ensures that you can meet your financial obligations while studying.
3. Health and Character
You may need to provide medical certificates and a police clearance to prove you are in good health and of good character. This is to ensure that you do not pose a health or safety risk to New Zealand’s public.
4. Sponsor or Financial Guarantor
If you are unable to show sufficient personal funds, you may be able to use a sponsor or financial guarantor who can provide evidence of their ability to support you financially. A sponsor must be a New Zealand citizen or resident. You must be able to prove your relationship with evidence.
5. Outward Travel Funds
You need to show that you have sufficient funds to cover your travel back to your home country upon completion of your studies, or have a return ticket already booked.
6. Other Requirements
Genuine Student Requirement – Evidence that you genuinely intend to study and that your primary purpose for coming to New Zealand is education.
Confirmation of Enrolment – Proof of acceptance into an accredited educational institution in New Zealand.
Course Details – Information about the course you will be studying, including duration, content, credits and scheduled vacations.
